How fortunate we are to have the best of both worlds! -- Deborah Socha

I’m diving back into some messages that came in during our recent fund drive, and some follow-ups. Remember that for listeners who would like to hear Classical HQR on 96.7 but are having difficulty, there is a solution for you – an HD Radio which will pick up the HD2 signal of 91.3. This works very well and you can find out about our Pay It Forward plan at whqr.org.

I have refused to donate for years because of the lack of jazz in your programming. Now, every nite I have it so hooray!!!

Listener Karyl of Myrtle Beach wrote:

The programming that WHQR now offers is almost a copy of what SCETV Radio presents, presented at different times… [O]ther than your inclusion of NC news, regretfully, I have no reason to support your station… You do good work for your community, but my reason for listening to you is gone.

I wrote to Karyl about the HD radio Pay It Forward plan, which will bring in our HD2 Classical HQR signal, even in the Myrtle Beach area.

[The fundraising] episode of Coastline was especially entertaining...I love all the new programming.

Listener Barbara wrote:

At a recent performance at Thalian, I learned that WHQR gave a $10,000 gift to that organization. Very honestly, I'm a bit puzzled: If WHQR can afford to give such a large sum, why does it need a pledge drive? I suspect there is a good reason for the large financial gift to Thalian, but I would like to know what it is before making another donation to your station.

In response, we do have valued relationships with many nonprofit and cultural organizations in the community, including Thalian Hall. We provide promotional support (that is, air time) on a carefully selected basis. But we do not provide cash. This is sometimes referred to as a media sponsorship.

It's the perfect combo. How fortunate we are to have the best of both worlds -- right here in beautiful Wilmington!

We miss George Scheibner at 1pm.

As listeners may know, George's show is now called Standard Time, and airs at 8 pm weekdays. In fact, George Wesoloski said

I changed dinnertime to make sure I have the radio on at 8pm.

Listener Martyn wrote:

When one is settling down for the evening, most people enjoy soothing peaceful music. There is no fathoming your nightly Jazz segment. It will play the most strident discordant cacophony followed by a sweet vocal… You are approaching perfection. The jazz program is like one of those old dentists drills hitting a nerve.

I just want to say I’m completely enjoying the jazz tonight. The tunes being played are just perfect, and I didn’t realize you had jazz on Monday night... Thank you so much.

I am very glad you've changed to a full time news station. It's the only station I listen to.

Listener Jimmy M wrote:

I do enjoy your station, but I don't think I have ever heard you acknowledge the tax payers who support your station. I don't think some even know there tax money/tax breaks go to stations like yours. Please correct me if I am wrong.

In response, we do receive about 9 percent of our funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and this was mentioned in the drive. All the rest we raise from the local community. And of course your contributions to the station are tax-deductible.

I'm glad we have 2 hours of Science Friday.

Thanks to everyone for your comments. Again – for disappointed classical listeners, find out how you can get a possibly free HD radio that will solve your problems. Visit whqr.org.

We’d love to hear from you on Friday Feedback. You can always leave a message via email to feedback@WHQR.org. Our Feedback Phone is 910-292-9477. And thanks for your feedback.
