The world of classical music is so vast, even experts like Wilmington Symphony Orchestra conductor Steven Errante stumble upon new pieces all the time. One piece that recently came into Errante's purview is by Cuban composer, conductor, and guitarist, Leo Brouwer (born in 1939 in Havana). The piece is Brouwer's Concerto #3, Elegiaco. Julian Bream (for whom the piece was written) premiered the piece in London in 1986. Errante invited guitarist Justin Hoke to join WSO to perform this piece for the Season Finale concert on Saturday, April 22nd at the Wilson Center. The concert begins at 7:30 and includes Smetena's Moldau and Shostakovich's The Gadfly as well. Here are program notes for the concert.

The Wilmington Symphony Orchestra (WSO) continues its Serenades season with guest artist Daniella Zezelj-Gualdi, Croatian violinist and professor of music at UNCW. Danijela and WSO perform Tchaikovsky's Serenade in C and Albinoni's Sinfonia in G minor, but the highlight of the concert is Astor Piazzolla's Four Seasons of Buenos Aires. Piazzolla revolutionized tango music by incorporating jazz and classical elements into traditional tango, creating tango nuevo. Danijela spoke with us about Piazzolla and the violin she'll be playing on loan from Ronald Sachs Violin; listen above.

Expect Symphonies from the WSO

According to Reed Wallace, September is the "I like the Wilmington Symphony" month.  Mr. Wallace is the Executive Director of the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra (WSO) and arguably its biggest fan, so whether he is joking or not remains a mystery.  Still, when you take a look at the Masterworks series the WSO is producing this season, you might be inclined to join him in the like--or even Love.
