Bertha and Rita Todd recall graduation season in the Spring of 1968 at Wilmington’s Williston High School. It was to be the final commencement. Williston’s student body was to be integrated into other area schools, and would cease to exist as a secondary institution.

In today's story, Carolyn James and her Cape Fear Literacy Council teacher Sara Strassle meet-up to talk about Carolyn's journey. Carolyn was in third grade when she left her all-black school in South Carolina to be integrated into a white school called Kingstree Elementary - but that’s when she stopped learning to read.

Today is National Day of Listening

One of the StoryCorps mobile recording booths, an Airstream trailer outfitted with a recording studio that travels the country year-round collecting stories. WHQR hosted a mobile recording booth this spring in downtown Wilmington.

The day after Thanksgiving is the National Day of Listening, an annual initiative by the oral history project StoryCorps, a nonprofit group that has recorded and archived 40,000 interviews between friends and loved ones across the country.
