New Hanover County

North Carolinians once eligible for federal assistance to help keep their houses warm may not receive funding this winter. Last year New Hanover County received $800,000 for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program. WHQR’s Sara Wood reports this year that number has dwindled to $226,000.

Despite a denied funding request from New Hanover County earlier this year, an arts council will be launched in Wilmington next month. After a three-year effort, the North Carolina Arts Council made the announcement this week.

The 2011 municipal elections in the Cape Fear region, as analyzed by Ralph Kornegay, Professor of Political Science Emeritus at Cape Fear Community College and currently an instructor at UNC Wilmington.

Saturday is the last day for early voting in New Hanover County where there are more than 87,000 registered voters eligible for municipal elections. WHQR’s Sara Wood reports that despite the county’s efforts to make early voting more accessible, turnout so far for this election remains predictably low.

New Hanover County Welcomes Smith Creek Park

New Hanover County welcomed its newest, 92-acre park today near Gordon and Harris Roads. Smith Creek Park features a fresh water lake, kayak and canoe launches, trails, and a playground.
