New Hanover County Commissioner Profiles

Dr. Derrick Hickey says when he moved to Wilmington 10 years ago, New Hanover County’s economy was booming. 

Beth Dawson is an 11th-generation North Carolinian who grew up in High Point, married a local boy, and moved here more than 26 years ago. 

New Hanover County native Buck O’Shields is not a new name to the race for county commission.

Republican Candidate Woody White is a local attorney who says he’s running for a seat on the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners because of what he calls a crisis in leadership.

As a lifelong resident of New Hanover County, Stephen Vosnock says he pays attention to county issues and is hoping to take that involvement to the government level.

Rob Zapple is one of four Democratic candidates running for a seat on the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners. 

As a fourth generation New Hanover County native, Democrat Robert Murray served 20 years in the army and returned to Porters Neck where he continues to run his family’s farm and volunteer with the fire department.

Republican Frank Christopher Meares is throwing his hat into the race for New Hanover County Commissioner after an unsuccessful bid for a Wilmington City Council seat last year.

The Vice Chairman of the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners describes himself as a local boy and a second-generation county commissioner -- after his father.

Jason Thompson is one of two incumbents running for a seat on the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners.  The Republican candidate completes his first four-year term this year.  And as he told WHQR’s Rachel Lewis Hilburn, he believes in term limits – which means he’s running for what would be his second and final term.
