This is ALL THINGS CONSIDERED from NPR News. I'm Melissa Block.
AUDIE CORNISH, HOST:
I'm Audie Cornish. And we begin this hour with Isaac. The storm came ashore last night as a minimal hurricane and has been pounding the Gulf Coast ever since. Isaac is moving slowly, bringing heavy rain and winds over 70 miles per hour. It's lost some power and been downgraded to a tropical storm. But Isaac is still a big threat to Louisiana and Mississippi.
Tonight is Paul Ryan's night. The Vice Presidential nominee will address the Republican National Convention in Tampa. Mara Liasson joins Audie Cornish to talk about the candidate, his politics and policies.
Melissa Block speaks with U.S. Paralympian and flag bearer at the Paralympics opening ceremony, Scott Danberg. The competition, which opens tonight in London, will be Danberg's fifth Paralympic Games. Over the years he has participated in multiple events, from power-lifting to javelin.
People walk in the storm surge from Hurricane Isaac along Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans. Isaac was later downgraded to a tropical storm as it continued to grind its way through the Gulf Coast, dropping torrential rain and generating dangerous storm surges.

Isaac might not be in the same league as Hurricane Katrina seven years ago, but the latest storm to batter Louisiana's Gulf Coast is punching above its weight class in more ways than one, scientists say.
Former Democratic Rep. Artur Davis spoke Tuesday at the Republican National Convention: "Some of you may know," he said, "the last time I spoke at a convention, it turned out I was in the wrong place."

There's a lot of glory in switching parties, but often not much future.
Both major parties are giving prominent speaking roles to political apostates at their conventions. On Tuesday, Artur Davis — a former Democrat and a former congressman from Alabama — condemned President Obama during a speech at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla.
A team of torchbearers brings the Paralympic flame through Piccadilly Circus as the torch heads across London to the Olympic Stadium. The Paralympic Games' opening ceremony will be held Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. ET.
