Singer/songwriter/guitarist Brent Stimmel shared his music with us at Soup To Nuts Live! on Feb. 28, 2013. Guest musician Les Britt provided a wonderfully subtle backdrop of electric guitar and vocal harmonies that made this STNL! a night to remember.  WHQR thanks Brent & Les for their great performance and being a part of what we do at 91.3fm.

Local flamenco guitarist William "Paco" Strickland passed away Monday afternoon.  He had been battling cancer for the better part of 5 years.  Having been the host of Flamenco Cafe, a program carried on WHQR for more than 15 years, Paco was part of the WHQR family and a great friend to all who were lucky enough to know him.  Four years ago today, Paco performed on the program Soup to Nuts Live in the WHQR gallery.  In remembrance of Paco, we have a clip from that performance in which George Scheibner asks Paco about his cancer and how it was impacting his life at the time.  Additionally, I

Marina De Ratmiroff, professor in UNCW’s Music Department, told us about some of the fall concerts coming up, almost all of which cost only $5 or are free. Details can be found at

When our webmaster John Mortara said it was my turn to post a Top Five blog entry, I thought it would be a pretty simple matter – just come up with my favorite flavors of ice cream, or Cincinnati Reds infielders, or whatever. But no, I had to dig down deep for this one.

Every now and then you may hear a WHQR announcer say "This CD was part of a major donation by Lee Fetner and Jeff Wingfield."  Major, indeed!  Lee and Jeff recently donated their entire collection of about 1350 classical CDs to the station.  This is not only a huge addition to our 7000-CD classical library, it’s the biggest single donation of CDs to WHQR of all time.

Last week we gave you a sample of some comments made by members who joined WHQR during our Fall fund drive that. Now it’s the turn of some of our renewing members.

The Friday after a fund drive is always a good source of material for Friday Feedback, and we had a bumper crop this time, with comments from over 800 listener-members. Of course we’re very happy that the drive went over its goal by the stated end last Tuesday, and especially happy that we had pledges from 295 new members. So we decided to limit today’s selections to new members only, to see what the tipping point is that converts a listener into a member.
