Bill Finley of Southport wrote: "After a month of trying to get used to the lack of signal on 96.7, I gathered up all the loose change and splurged on a $52 HD radio. All is well. I love WHQR again. Played through my audio system the quality of  the HD signal is superb. All is forgiven." You can be eligible for a free HD Radio.

This Monday night WHQR welcomed highly revered filmmaker Ira Sachs to the ILM!  Many eager movie-goers and fans met Sachs at Cinematique, WHQR's independent film series at Thalian Hall, for a screening of Sach's critically acclaimed film "Love is Strange" starring John Lithgow and Alfred Molina, as well as a brilliant Q & A with filmmaker Ira Sachs. Tom Magliozzi, one of the hosts of Car Talk, passed away today, Monday, November 3, due to complications of Alzheimer's Disease.

Car Talk producer Doug Berman wrote this, in part, to stations this afternoon:

Tom’s been such a dominant, positive personality amongst us for so long that all of us in the public radio family—and I include our millions of listeners—will find this news very difficult to receive...

The recent addition of Classical HQR 96.7fm and the simultaneous revamp of HQR News 91.3fm have been, as expected, mammoth tasks. Because we are automated during parts of the day and on weekends, we have had to re-write literally thousands of lines of computer code. Some of it has gone more smoothly than we could have hoped.

Since signing on Classical HQR at 96.7 last week, we have received many messages of thanks from classical listeners in New Hanover and areas in neighboring counties who are overjoyed to have classical music on FM 24 hours a day. But listeners elsewhere have reported reception problems.

Be sure to check out the slideshow above to see pictures from this truly historic night!

Friends of Public Radio, Inc., licensee of WHQR Public Radio, has completed the purchase of the station's office and broadcast facilities at 254 North Front Street from Hexagon Holdings, Inc.

Hexagon has owned the third floor property in the Warwick Building for several years, with WHQR as its sole tenant. The agreement was signed by David Zumbro, Chair of the non-profit Friends of Public Radio, and representatives from Hexagon Holdings. The agreement followed a vote by the station's Board of Directors to purchase its own radio facility.

A New Day for WHQR

Aug 11, 2014

Today, August 11, 2014, is a significant day in WHQR's progress toward a second, all-classical station. Listeners to classical music starting this week with Pat Marriott and Jemila Ericson will hear our morning classical music from our newly-revamped Classical Studio 3. The music from 9 am to 1 pm will be simulcast on both 91.3fm and HD, and on HD2. (Of course, both will be streamed over the internet).

WHQR held its Annual Meeting on July 17, 2014!

WHQR staff, volunteers, board members, and our supporting public met in the MC Erny Gallery at WHQR Studios for a wonderful night of celebrating the past year's triumphs and the next year's goals. WHQR wants to say thank you to everyone who took time out of their busy lives to help support local public radio.

A special thank you to Paul Reinmann for catching this wonderful night on film - Don't forget to check out the slideshow!

WOW!

seems to be the most apt word for the events of Tuesday, July 22nd. When we began, after a somewhat slow first day, it was hard to see how we could finish this summer's Keep It Short drive in even 3 days, let alone 2. The sudden $20,000 pledge at 6:57 am transformed everything and led to a very satisfying next 12 hours.

Retired Judge Stuart Namm joined us in June to speak about his memoir, A Whistle Blower's Lament: The Perverted Pursuit of Justice in the State of New York. Namm spoke candidly with us about his experience as a judge in Suffolk County, New York,  the impetus for his book, and the plot of his real-life political thriller.

WHQR Annual Meeting

Jul 8, 2014

WHQR's Annual Meeting will take place on Thursday, July 17th, 2014, at 6:00 pm in the MC Erny Gallery at WHQR, 254 North Front Street Suite 300, Wilmington. The public is invited (please see below for reservations). Snacks will be provided.

WHQR needs individuals to answer phones during our  Summer 2014 Pledge Drive. Pledges are taken by computer, so all volunteers should feel comfortable typing and using the system. Shifts begin with a brief orientation and can be a fun way to meet other Public Radio fans and hang out with the WHQR staff! To sign up, email Jarred at memberservices@whqr.org with the specific day and time that you would like to take and your name and contact information.
