Soup to Nuts Live!: Lisa and Galen

Lucky us! The highly acclaimed jazz duo Lisa and Galen are joining us, along with special guest and student Sean. The talented Lisa Rankin is known for her dexterity on the piano, the keybass, the flute, the recorder, the tin whistle, the harmonica, the six string guitar, the twelve string guitar and her amazing vocals. Galen Hunsucker is magnificent on the electric and acoustic guitars, and after spending more than 30 years in the music business captivates audiences with his stellar vocals.

Artistic Director of Big Dawg Productions, Steve Vernon is directing  the upcoming show  "The Hermit of Fort Fisher" by David Wright. Eben French Mastin stars as Robert E. Harrill, who lived in a WWII bunker at Fort Fisher for many years and became quite a tourist attraction. The show highlights interactions with the family he left behind and the visitors he enjoyed. It runs September 4-21, Thursdays through Saturdays at 8pm and Sundaya at 3pm at Cape Fear Playhouse on Castle Street.

Gina Gambony Visits The Sarus Festival

The Sarus Festival featuring site-specific and experimental art is underway!Dozens of local and visiting artists are creating public performances, often held outdoors. WHQR's Gina Gambony visited the rehearsal for one event: an unusual interpretation of "A Midsummer Night's Dream," happening in the backyard of Jengo's Playhouse on Princess Street.

Tonia Lovejoy is an educator and explorer who has created an organization called the Beautiful Nation Project. Its website offers a hug array of tools on many platforms to expand our understanding of how where we live affects how we live. She will be taking an all female crew of scientists, explorers and educators on her sailboat for an around-the-world trip starting September 15. Their journey can be followed at BeautifulNationProject.org

On Sunday, August 17 WHQR listeners, members, staff and volunteers gathered together in the picnic area of Tidal Creek on Oleander for the common cause of...ice cream! and, of course, public radio. People from all walks of life enjoyed a few hours of fun and relaxation while WHQR station staff scooped several flavors of frozen delights from Velvet Freeze into their cups and cones.
