During our Classical block on Tuesdays through Fridays at 12:06, Jemila Ericson and other staff members host a celebration of the arts and culture of the Lower Cape Fear. They interview artists, actors, dancers, writers and creators of community events--all the inspiring movers and shakers who enrich our lives.

Danijela Zezelj-Gualdi is a concert violist and violinist who grew up in the former Yugoslavia during the Serbo-Croation conflict.  She lives in Wilmington now and teaches at UNCW.  She and her husband Paolo Andre Gualdi (a renowned concert pianist) give many concerts.

Today I spoke with Norman Bemelmans.  He is Director of Cultural Arts at UNCW and a renowned concert pianist.  He and Elizabeth Loparits are giving a concert tomorrow night, September 4th at 8PM in Kenan Auditorium at UNCW. The show will feature solo and duo piano works of Beethoven, Debussy and Gershwin.

Midday Interview: Rabbi Robert Waxman

Rabbi Robert Waxman, who has served the conservative B’nai Israel Synagogue at 2601 Chestnut Street for over 30 years, tells us about the Jewish High Holy Days.  Rosh Hashanah (New Year) begins at sundown tomorrow.  Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) begins at sundown on Friday the 13th.

Midday Interview: Tony Rivenbark on "The Shakespeare Club" Film Series

Tony Rivenbark is the Executive Director of Thalian Hall Center for the Performing Arts. His latest brainstorm is a films series called The Shakespeare Club, “Screening the films that you have never seen and the films you want to see again!” The series starts on September 5, and continues on the first Thursday of each month.

Christy English, a successful local author who is working on her fifth novel, will be at Old Books on Front Street at 4pm on Sunday.  She’ll talk about her latest book, Love on a Midsummer Night, inspired by Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.  Actors Gray Hawks and Christy Grantham will present a scene from Shakepeare’s play and English will read from her novel.

Midday Interview: Thalian Association Children’s Theatre Presents "It Takes Two"

It Takes Two will be a benefit concert held this Saturday night, 8pm at the Hannah Block Historic USO at 2nd and Orange. Young performers from Thalian Association Children’s Theatre (T.A.C.T.) are paired with adults from Thalian Association Community Theatre in duets and ensembles, singing famous songs from Broadway musicals. 

There’s a dessert reception and silent auction on Saturday at 7pm; the show follows at 8pm. Tickets are available for $18 (plus a $.75 preservation fee).
