Wilmington Worker Rebuilding Kabul Intl'

Wilmington, NC – An employee with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer's Wilmington District is in Afghanistan renovating the country's only international airport.

The Corps of Engineers says right now the primary way into and out of Afghanistan is through the Kabul International Airport.

The Wilmington District's Glenn McIntosh is taking over the project from Larry Bergmooser, who says last spring the airport was only being used for military flights. Bergmooser says now most of the air traffic at Kabul International is commercial. And that is vital to rebuilding Afghanistan.

"There are no ports, there are no freeways as we have in the United States that go easily from one country to the next. If you're going to bring commerce in, if you're going to bring people in to generate income and to generate revenue and growth, it's going to be through air travel."

Bergmooser says Wilmington's Glen McIntosh will be in charge of renovating Kabul International's control tower and installing security check points.

He says while passengers in Kabul go through tighter security, they do get to keep their shoes on.
