Wilmington Hosts Final Cycling Safety Workshop

09-10-10 – Wilmington's Ann Street Bicycle Boulevard is the first road in North Carolina to give priority to bicycles over motor vehicles. For the past month, organizers have provided bicycle safety workshops along this route to make streets safer for cyclists.

Using the remaining funds from a 2009 Fit Community grant, the city of Wilmington is hosting a final bicycle safety training event on Saturday.

Adrienne Walters works for the Wilmington Transportation Division.

She says the program has taught hundreds of local residents how to ride safely on city streets. And these cyclists usually don't go home empty handed.

"Everybody's been able to go away with something, you know, whether it's a bike lock or a bicycle friendly grocery bag. It's usually a pretty good day."

Kids of all ages will learn proper roadway etiquette, what do to at intersections, and how to react when chased by dogs.

The event kicks off Saturday morning at 10AM at the MLK Center on the corner Ann and South 8th Streets.
