Have you noticed that WHQR's Cultural Calendar looks a bit different? If you have, that's because we've updated it to the new and improved Cultural Calendar! Submitting community events will now be more straightforward, and the calendar will be more easily navigable. Tell us how you like the new Community Calendar by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
We think WHQR Public Radio is an important part of the cultural fabric of our community. We support and enhance the artistic life of this region in two basic ways: through our music and cultural programs on the air, and through the other events and promotions which we offer.
At least three times a day, we broadcast the Cultural Calendar of events and activities in our region. This provides useful information to our listeners and supports nonprofit arts groups with limited advertising budgets. We offer interviews with cultural leaders, a midday news program, and daily public service announcements, providing valuable local information to the community. In times of emergencies, this local information is particularly important. We also host forums on issues of local interest.
WHQR sponsors live concerts at our station, some of which are also broadcast. Monthly art exhibits in our MC Erny Gallery give local artists an opportunity to display their work to the public. We co-sponsor Cinematique at Thalian Hall, a film series that screens foreign and art films, which otherwise might not make it to the Wilmington big screen.
WHQR has a particular focus on exposing young people to classical music and jazz. Music teachers tell us that WHQR's music programming helps them to encourage their students. WHQR is an invaluable service to many listeners who are bedridden, or otherwise immobile, and residents with limited means for attending live concerts.
