CAPE FEAR MEMORIAL BRIDGE: Updates, resources, and context

WHQR Currently On Reduced Power

Wikimedia Commons

UPDATE WEDNESDAY MORNING: WHQR is now on low power as a result of antenna icing (see below). Listeners distant from our transmitter in Brunwick County may have reception problems. If possible, we encourage you to try our online stream, available in the upper left of this page.

As the winter storm approaches, WHQR is making provisions for adjusting our broadcast power. Pretty much the worst condition for FM antennas is the type of frozen precipitation that we see moving into the area Tuesday afternoon and evening, and on into Wednesday. Icing on the antenna elements has the potential to put our transmitter out of service. Here are the steps we will take and their results:

  • Reducing power to the primary transmitter (this was done earlier Tuesday as a precaution)
  • Shutting down the primary and going to the backup transmitter (very likely during Tuesday evening/Wednesday morning)
  • When this happens, we have no HD2 (all classical) signal on the air. However, we will plan continue to stream both online streams and they should continue to be operational barring a widespread outage affecting the internet.

Stay tuned to WHQR, especially Tuesday's All Things Considered and Wednesday's Morning Edition, for the latest developments.
