CAPE FEAR MEMORIAL BRIDGE: Updates, resources, and context

Sunshine Camp for Grieving Youth

Cape Fear Hospice & Lifecare
Lorraine Perry, Healing Arts Coordinator & Bereavement Counselor

There is something comforting about the way people who work for Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center are not afraid to talk about death-you know, that thing that happens to everyone but we mostly don't want to talk about?  As we get older, we realize how it affects us when others pass away and come to grips with the inevitable journey we each will take.

When a family suffers a loss, there are times when youth are severely affected, but the adults in the room might be too overwhelmed with their own grief to help them.  It can also be difficult to help children who have significant disturbances caused by loss, and someone with training might be needed.

Sunshine Camp is a free service LCFH offers to help bereaving youth, grouping children by age and in small groups (maximum 12).  The New Hanover County camp is full for this summer, but 1-session camps in Columbus and Brunswick counties still have space.  Another program, Sunrise Teens, is created on an as-needed basis.
