Subpoena Suggests Interest In Sheriff's Campaign

By Megan V. Williams

Wilmington, NC – A Federal Grand Jury is interested in the election campaign of Brunswick County Sheriff Ronald Hewitt, according to a subpoena made public Monday by the Brunswick County Attorney's Office.

The four-page letter subpoenas numerous financial documents, including phone records and personnel documents relating to Hewett's election campaign.

It also names 36 'relevant parties,' ranging from members of Hewett's family, to the Sheriff's office, to the Sea Trails Golf Resort. But the subpoena does not say what specifically Assistant U.S. Attorney Dennis Duffy is investigating.

Hewitt has been ordered to appear before the federal grand jury in Raleigh next Wednesday and Thursday.

Hewett was reelected sheriff last year. He's held the position for the past 13 years.
