Soup to Nuts Live!: Words and Music -Whiskey Creek and The Whitley Brothers
Note: This show is sold out, but WHQR is maintaining a wait list.
This is a special edition of Soup to Nuts Live! We're pleased to welcome the band Whiskey Creek along with the Whitley Brothers Duo! It's a night of literary superstars playing music. The evening will feature friends of WHQR Philip Gerard, Clyde Edgerton, and John Jeremiah Sullivan, to name a few.
Whiskey Creek plays an eclectic set of tunes inspired by the traditions of bluegrass, Americana, old-time, Celtic, and country. The band features Dargan Frierson on acoustic bass, guitar, and vocals; Deb Ross on fiddle; Dave Storniolo on bodhran (Irish drum); Rick Olsen on harmonica, keyboard and vocals; and Philip Gerard on six and twelve-string guitar, banjo, hammered dulcimer, dobro, and vocals. Their sets include original songs by Gerard, country and old-time standards, and music of the Civil War era. Every show is different, tailored to the audience, always featuring new material. The band encourages singing along with standards!
The Whitley Brothers hail from Locomotive, South Carolina where they were raised by train robbers. They keep ancient blues performers and blues music alive by performing with "noticeable resemblance" to old recordings. One brother is older than the other and they enjoy an accumulation of artifacts. One reviewer has said of their stage show, "They do art through hurt, and dress well." The Whitley Brothers are Clyde Edgerton and John Jeremiah Sullivan.
