Severe Weather Affects Cape Fear Region, Prompts Widespread Closings

Severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and into early this evening, according to the National Weather Service.  Counties affected include New Hanover, Brunswick, Pender, Bladen, Columbus, Robeson, Sampson, Onslow, Horry, Dillon, and Marion.

A wind advisory is in effect until 8pm tonight.  Winds could gust as high as 50 miles per hour, and some small hail is possible with the storm.  Lawn furniture and trash cans could become airborne, so it is advised to bring in or secure such items to avoid damage.

The severe weather has resulted in various early dismissals and closings throughout the region.  See below for a list, but be sure to check with your school or organization for additional information.

New Hanover County

All New Hanover County offices and venues (including county parks, libraries ,and the Cape Fear Museum) will close today at 2pm.

City of Wilmington offices will close at 2pm.  City crews are on standby to address any debris that may fall into city streets, including trees, limbs, etc.  Residents are asked to report trees or debris blocking city streets by calling (910) 341-7852.  There is no scheduled solid waste pick-up today in Wilmington, but solid waste customers whose pick-up is Thursday are advised to wait until the winds have subsided before placing their bins at the curb.

New Hanover County Schools will be dismissed early.  Elementary schools will dismiss at 11:30am.  Middle and high school students will dismiss at 12:30pm.  Early colleges will dismiss at 1:30pm.  Pre-K and Head Start classes are canceled.

Friends School of Wilmington will also dismiss students early.  The Peiffer campus is closing at 11:15.  Pine Grove closes at 11:30.

Cape Fear Academy is releasing lower grades at 11:30, middle and upper grades at noon.

UNCW’s campus remains open, but any classes scheduled to start at noon or later are canceled.

Cape Fear Community College will close today at 1pm.  All campus events scheduled for today are also canceled.

Wave Transit bus service is operating normal schedule.  UNCW Seahawk Shuttle service will conclude at 1pm, since university classes end at noon.

All New Hanover County Brigade Boys & Girls Club sites are closed today.

Community Boys & Girls Club of Wilmington is closed today.

The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher will close at 1pm. 

Brunswick County

Brunswick County Government offices and the Brunswick County Courthouse will close today at 1pm. 

Brunswick County Schools will dismiss early as well.  Elementary schools will release at 12:30pm.  Middle schools will release at 11:45am.  High schools will release at 11:30am.  All of today’s professional development and after-school activities for the school system are canceled.

Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc. (BSRI) will close at 11:30am.  BSRI will provide Meals on Wheels to all current participants, and will be available for emergency meals or other needs after 11:30.  Call (910) 632-4600.

The Small Business Advisory Commission meeting scheduled for this evening has been canceled.

Pender County

Pender County Schools will dismiss early. Elementary schools will release at 11am.  Topsail Middle School will be dismissed at noon, with the rest of the county’s middle schools releasing at 11am.  All Pender County high schools will release at noon.  All of today’s after-school activities are canceled.
