Wilmington, NC – The federal program Safe Routes to School helps cities get kids to walk or bike to school.

It works by gathering school officials, parents, neighbors and city planners all into the same room to figure out how to make Wilmington bike friendly for kids.

The city started its Safe Routes to School program focusing on Bradley Creek, Holly Tree and Parsley elementary schools. City planners sat down with parents and teachers to literally map out ways to get more kids walking and biking to school.

City planner Joshua Mello says those three school presented unique challenges.
