Railroad Crossings Now Safer

Wilmington, NC – North Carolina rail officials say safety improvements have been made to railroad crossings in Lumberton and Fayetteville. The crossing adjacent to Lumberton High School and the Fayetteville crossing at Southgate Road now have signals and gates.

One train a day rolls past the Linkhall Road gate in Lumberton gate, while two trains pass through the intersection of Southgate Road and Aberdeen in Fayetteville.

Maintenance costs will be split evenly between the state and the railroads.

The Federal Railroad Administration ranks North Carolina 11th in the number of accidents at railroad crossings.

There are now automatic warning devices at more than half of North Carolina's public at-grade crossings.
