Prep Work Starts on 1898 Memorial Park

Wilmington, NC – Prep work has started on the 1898 memorial park planned for the northern entrance to downtown Wilmington.

The city says it has started to move fill dirt for the 1898 memorial park located just a few blocks from where the first shots were fired in the Wilmington race riot of 1898.

The memorial park is a joint project with Department of Transportation and the City of Wilmington.

Members of the 1898 park committee are working with an Atlanta-based artist who is constructing 16 sculptures shaped like African paddles as the center piece for the triangle shaped park, which is scheduled to open next year.
