CAPE FEAR MEMORIAL BRIDGE CLOSURE: UPDATES, RESOURCES, AND CONTEXT

N.Y. Woman Sentenced To Jail For Using The F-Word

STEVE INSKEEP, HOST:

Good morning. I'm Steve Inskeep. Let's start by saying Jeannie Groat may have overreacted. Angry that her daughter was eliminated from a 4H competition, the upstate NY woman protested using the F-word. But according to the Walton Reporter, she was charged with disorderly conduct and sentenced to 15 days in jail. Even prosecutors say they did not ask for such a harsh penalty. Another judge blocked the jail time, but we can imagine what Ms. Groat said when she first heard of it. You're listening to MORNING EDITION. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
