CAPE FEAR MEMORIAL BRIDGE: Updates, resources, and context

New Hanover County Primary Results and North Carolina Senate District 9

The race for New Hanover County's Board of Commissioners was packed on the Republican side with ten candidates competing for two open seats.

-----------------------------------------

It was Skip Watkins, former candidate for Wilmington City Council, who walked away with the most votes for a seat on the New Hanover County Commission.  Derrick Hickey, a current School Board member and local orthopedist, garnered the second spot.   Chuck Kays came in a very close third.  There was no contest on the Democratic side.

New Hanover County’s Board of Education has four open seats.  Five GOP candidates competed for a spot on the ticket.  The four winners include Don Hayes, Bruce Shell, Ed Higgins, and Janice Cavenaugh -- all incumbents except Shell.  There are just three Democratic candidates for New Hanover County’s school board – and so, no primary contest.

In the Sheriff’s race, Democratic Incumbent Ed McMahon shellacked his opponent and former boss, Sid Causey, scooping up more than 80% of the vote.   Jason Vaughn took the Republican nomination, beating Marc Benson by about 10%.

The race for Senator Thom Goolsby’s seat – State Senate District 9 – which covers most of New Hanover County – saw Michael Lee shoot to the top – leaving Michael Burns and Justin LaNasa in single-digit second and third spots.
