North Carolina’s House District 18 – which includes New Hanover and Brunswick Counties – is one of the few regional races with a Democratic winner. Incumbent Susi Hamilton will serve her district for a fourth term.
Susi Hamilton has managed to keep her seat for four consecutive terms and beat her latest Republican challenger, Gerald Benton, by about 22 points. Benton has never held elected office before. But the support for Hamilton is decidedly in New Hanover County where she won by a landslide – 74% to Benton’s 26%. In Brunswick County, which has fewer voters in House District 18, the Republican challenger won by about 12.5 points.
In House District 16, made up of Pender County and the northwest corner of Onslow County, Republican incumbent Chris Millis easily fought back a challenge from Democrat Steve Unger. Millis won by about 34 percentage points.
And in Brunswick County’s House District 17, Republican Incumbent Frank Iler kept his seat – by a similar margin – beating Democratic challenger Charles Warren by nearly 33 points.
