Wilmington, NC – Navy and Coast Guard rescue teams are searching just off the coast near Wilmington for three crewmembers aboard a Navy plane that crashed late Wednesday night.

The three crewmembers were conducting a training exercise when their E-2C Hawkeye went down shortly after taking off from the aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman.

Navy spokesperson Mike Maus says it happened about 50 miles off the coast near Wilmington.

He says the Navy and Coast Guard have crews searching in the air and on the water for the missing crew.

They're sweeping the area, increasing their search area in hopes of making a successful recovery.

Maus says there's no word on what's been found so far. He says weather was not a factor.
