The Executive Director of the Historic Wilmington Foundation(HWF) visited our studios to discuss the importance of National Preservation Month in our area and tell us about the events HWF has planned. One of the highlights for local history aficionados is a bus trip that will take participants to an 18th century plantation that was only recently uncovered (listen to the interview to hear George talk about the Oakland Plantation). There are several events sponsored by HWF to promote historic awareness and preservation-and naturally, there is also a push by the organization to reinstate the historic preservation tax credits.
Events this month include:
HWF Preservation Awards Ceremony on Thursday, May 21, at 6:00 pm
Historic New Hanover County Courthouse. Awards to be presented for restoration, rehabilitation, compatible infill, adaptive reuse projects, and others. Spring Shrimparoo on Thursday, May 28 at 6:30 pm. This is a "Friendraiser" and membership event. Riverwalk Landing at Elijah’s Restaurant with fresh shrimp, cold beer & live music on the deck. Music by Stray Local! Tour of Bladen and Columbus County Historic Plantations and Churches Sunday, May 31, 2015 1:00 pm – 6:30 pm. This tour features the c. 1845 Black Rock Plantation & the c. 1780 Oakland Plantation, plus Carver's Creek Methodist Church (Greek Revival,1859) and Carver's Creek AME Zion (late 19th c).
