Inside WHQR: Gina Gambony Earns 2nd Place in Worldwide Radio Contest

Aug 29, 2016

WHQR’s Gina Gambony earned her spot as top dog in radio as she secured 2nd place in KCRW’s 4th Annual Radio Race.

238 Radio Racers from 8 countries entered the contest, but only half were able to complete their stories. The challenge was to create a 4-minute brand new piece of audio telling a non-fiction story in just 24 hours. KCRW's UnFictional created the contest’s theme, “OUT OF RANGE”, and threw in a curve ball at hour 12 in the form of a quote by Rebecca Solnit: “People look into the future and expect that the forces of the present will unfold in a coherent and predictable way, but any examination of the past reveals the circuitous routs of change are unimaginably strange.”

4 final judges (at New Yorker Radio HourStudio 360, London's Falling Tree, and Latino USA) deliberated and assigned Top Ten honorees before selecting the final winners.

Gina Gambony's piece, "Route 104" was announced on the August 26 episode of KCRW’s UnFictional as the 2nd place entry.

Gina had already been identified as a Top Ten Finalist in the contest.
