Ida Floods the State

Wilmington, NC – Forecasters with the National Weather Service say the rain's wrapping up a lot quicker than they thought.

The heaviest rains will pass over the Cape Fear region by this evening. The remnants of what was Hurricane Ida are expected to dump up to five inches of rain by tomorrow morning.

Mark Bacon with the National Weather Service in Wilmington says we're also seeing winds of up to 40mph.

"Although 40mph gusts are not normally problematic down here, with the ground being so saturated we're al little worried a couple trees could fall over as we've already seen a couple of instances occurring."

Bacon says light rain will continue to fall around the Cape Fear region until Friday. He says the Outer Banks is getting the brunt of the storm as a system out of the mid-west is drawing the moisture to the northeastern coast.
