History Springs Alive on the Battleship N.C.

08-13-10 – Civil-war era history will spring alive tomorrow on the Battleship North Carolina.

When visitors tour the battleship, they're usually learning about WWII events, but tomorrow, historians dressed in civil war attire will explore two other ships in the North Carolina lineage that served for the Union and Confederacy, respectively.

One was an ironclad vessel powered by steam, while the other was wooden and powered by sails.

Heather Loftin is the promotions director for the battleship and she says these stories are in danger of being lost.

"It doesn't seem that people have as much interest in the past or want to have as much knowledge on it. When you feel like you're sitting side-by-side or can touch something and experience it hands-on, you remember more of it."

In that vein, tomorrow's event will include displays on uniforms, knot-tying, and weaponry, along with working models of steam engines.
