Goolsby Comments on WOW's Monday Protests

Women Organizing for Wilmington, or WOW, will stage its third weekly protest outside the downtown law office of State Senator Thom Goolsby on Monday at noon. The pink-bedecked grassroots group still intends to rally against recent legislature that would tighten restrictions on North Carolina abortion clinics. Goolsby, who has been absent from the previous protests, is urging protesters to learn more about what they’re fighting for.

"Not you, not the state! Let women decide their fate! Not you, not the state! Let women decide their fate!"

Wilmington’s version of Moral Mondays consists of a lunch-hour sea of about 50 people bearing signs, wire coat hangers and even a few flamingo-hued motorcycle helmets. They're protesting anti-abortion measures--and the way in which a spokesperson for WOW says they were hidden in unrelated legislation. But  Goolsby says protesters need to understand that rather than trying to restrict access to abortion, he is working to ensure women’s safety.

"I had dozens, or I don’t know a hundred emails from people wanting to come counter-protest, and I asked them not to. I don’t want to seethe any tensions. All I ask is that people read the bill and understand that I want to see people protected when they seek abortion services."

WOW’s spokesperson says that this Monday, the group plans to clarify its specific reasons for protesting against Goolsby’s support of Senate Bill 353 and House Bill 695.
