Giving Thanks: A Celebration of Fall, Food, and Gratitude

Giving Thanks: A celebration of fall, food & gratitude.

At 11 am on Thanksgiving Day (November 26th) on Classical HQR 96.7 and at noon on HQR News 91.3 we will air holiday specials!

Classical HQR 96.7 programming at 11 am:

Special guests include Christopher Kimball, founder, editor, and publisher of Cook's Illustrated Magazine, and host of public television's most-watched cooking show, America's Test Kitchen. He'll take us to his Vermont farm for a New England Thanksgiving, and talk about the experiences for which he's most grateful.

And Stephen Hough, world famous concert pianist, composer, prize-winning poet, and MacArthur genius will share his essay "Thanksgiving for Thanksgiving" which he wrote for the London Telegraph, and we'll hear an excerpt from his favorite Thanksgiving author Willa Cather, and music from his new album of music by Edvard Grieg.

Also, Patrick Stewart reads autumn poems from John Keats and Antonio Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons”.

Classical music is the heart and soul of the original Giving Thanks. Between the music, no clichés about pilgrims and pumpkin pies.

Instead, it's a contemporary celebration of the spirit of Gratitude. And continuing a Giving Thanks tradition shared by 300 APM stations: a spellbinding story from actor Charles Laughton, giving thanks for Art that connects us all to the creative spirit.

Whether you are up early and in the kitchen, on the road to a family gathering, or relaxing after the feast, Giving Thanks provides the perfect atmosphere for Thanksgiving: the warmth of great music, and truly memorable words.

HQR News 91.3 at noon-

Snap Judgment: Gratitude.

'Tis the season to consider those things that we are most thankful for. On the critically-acclaimed Snap Judgment host Glynn Washington takes a look back on some of the stories that touch on the theme of gratitude, because we are so thankful!

“The Orange” - Storyteller Joel ben Izzy recalls a conversation he had with an older gent who describes the true beauty of a piece of fruit.

“Salted Egg” - Thirty years after the tragedy of the Khmer Rouge, a Cambodian Family begins an unlikely search for their missing father.

“Molly” - In an amazing performance, Marc Bamuthi Joseph uses his many gifts to transport an entire live audience from San Francisco to the heart of Africa. National Poetry Slam champion, Broadway veteran, GOLDIE award winner, Marc is also an inaugural recipient of the United States Artists Rockefeller Fellowship which annually recognizes 50 of the country's "greatest living artists."

“So Embarrassed” - For Jeff Greenwald, Tibet was a transcendentalist paradise. The people, the food, and the breathtaking beauty captivated him. And Tibet loved Jeff right back, granting him access to areas no Westerner had ever seen. It was almost like he fit right in.

Those stories and more on a Thanksgiving edition of SNAP JUDGMENT!
