CAPE FEAR MEMORIAL BRIDGE CLOSURE: UPDATES, RESOURCES, AND CONTEXT

Friday Feedback for May 13, 2016

Planting Peace / MFI

This came in from the WHQR Public Radio Facebook page: “Let me start by saying I enjoy your station however I am overly disturbed by your report on H.B. 2. Why [are] your correspondents failing to mention that the bill also includes a restriction on bringing race discrimination suits against employers in state prison ?....you continually mention the discrimination against the LGBT community but apparently refuse to acknowledge the bills discriminatory clause regarding people of color.....NOT good or thorough reporting”.

The writer is correct that there is much more to the HB2 story than the ubiquitous bathroom aspects. Because of this, we devoted an entire hour of CoastLine to HB2 several weeks ago in order to deal with others aspects. Any stories recently heard report most recent developments. No short report can deal with all. As the story unfolds, we will continue to examine the implications and repercussions.

Speaking of CoastLine, listener Lucy wrote:

I think Coastline is well-done, and I've often listened during lunchtime. But [the recent] hog waste episode probably was the end of the line! Maybe I'll try podcast.

Our interview with progressive theologian and Sojourners founder Jim Wallis sparked some comments on the story’s web page. Listener “AmericanPieHole59” posted a sharply-worded rebuttal. Perhaps this quote will give some idea of the flavor:

People like Jim Wallis are a big part of the problem because they do not understand the basics of civilization.

However, the purpose of Feedback is not to continue the debate inside one show or report. It’s to reflect comments on how we do things at the station. And the reason I bring this up is that “AmericanPieHole59”’s comment sparked a flood of lengthy comments (9 at last count) from listener Localgod12, also arguing against immigration reform. Frankly, that’s so much that the whole purpose of listener comments becomes distorted. I published one of them to give listeners the flavor. But at some point, enough’s enough.

We got this last week from Hampstead:

I have been having trouble with the new call numbers for 92.7. There is a cross reception with the same number but for the Beacon station. Don't know how that is possible as they say their number is the same as classical 92.7… Frustrating to say the least. thanks. a loyal fan, Cindy.

I wrote to Cindy that unfortunately, some listeners in the Hampstead area have reported hearing signals from a religious station near Pine Knoll Shores on Emerald Isle. The encroachment seems greatest when skies are overcast. While the 92.7 signal is definitely more powerful than 96.7 and has improved reception for many listeners, that may not be true where Cindy lives. Similarly for Richard in Ocean Isle, which is much too far away from either 92.7 or 102.3 in Myrtle Beach. Alternatives for them would be listening on-line at whqr.org, or listening to the HD2 channel of 91.3. That would require an HD Radio, which is available in the $50-$60 range at BestBuy.com or Amazon.com. An HD Radio would solve the problem entirely.

Cindy wrote back:

My car radio seems fine probably because I head into Wilmington when that is on. My home radio is a Bose system so I thought that should be good enough… right now of course WHQR is coming in great, go figure.

We'd love to hear from you on Friday Feedback. You can send an email message to feedback@whqr.org, or you can leave a call at 910-292-9477. And thanks for your Feedback.
