CAPE FEAR MEMORIAL BRIDGE CLOSURE: UPDATES, RESOURCES, AND CONTEXT

Friday Feedback for July 31, 2015

Thanks for the stealth drive. Very smart. And courageous. -- William Byrd

The greatest feedback of the past few weeks has been the fact that so many people joined together to push us over the top in our Stealth campaign. We finished 6 hours early, on Monday the 27th, and so we able to cancel our traditional summer marathon drive. We welcome all new and renewing members who contacted us by mail or web. Here are a few of their comments. Long-time listener and supporter Penelope wrote:

There was nothing "stealth" about the summer pledge drive. The numerous appeals for two weeks reminding listeners to contribute followed by the numerous Thank yous once it was accomplished from the various staff members. Please give me back a one day summer pledge drive. One and done.

I wrote to Penelope that, among other things, we’ve done a one-day drive only in December, not the summer; our summer drives are usually 3 or 4 days of full-press fundraising. See more in a column I wrote, 5 Questions about the Stealth Drive, at whqr.org.

Mary Farley wrote:

Wilmington is so fortunate to have HQR. My 3 kids have moved on from Wilmington but are now public radio supporters because of listening to HQR during their time living here. Thanks for that!

Zona Tounsley wrote:

We LOVE having classical music available all day!

Barbara Carey wrote:

Love your all talk station.

Julie Spangler wrote:

It is one of the many treasures of our city.

Myrna Cronen wrote:

Great idea to have this off air drive. I've contributed several times already this year and am contributing now to show support for this new approach to fundraising. Maybe UNCTV will get the message. I dislike their fund drives much more than yours!

William Hale from Raleigh wrote:

We love both stations. The good news is we will be moving to Wilmington in late August and will be able to listen all of the time.

One final note: Listener Steve wrote to Mary Bradley:

You all did a fantastic job but I have to admit to some degree I do miss the old fund raisers. Gone are the days of this is Mary Bradley, glug, glug, glug, and I've soaked myself with gasoline and will strike this match I am holding in my trembling fingers unless you meet this challenge or this is Cleve Callison, I am perched on the edge of the WHQR roof and will splatter myself all over Front Street like a large red water balloon unless we meet our goal. Ah, the good old days! At least this approach was much more civilized...if a tad less fun. [Peace be with you].

Thanks, Steve.

Listener Nancy wrote us this note:

First, I love WHQR and would be lost without it! Second, my tiny, niggly complaint: Would you please counsel WHQR’s announcers on the pronunciation of the world JOO-el-ry. It’s a pretty word, isn’t it? It is not JOOOO-le-ry. We deeply appreciated your recent correction of the pronunciation of Camp LeJeune, and if you could do this other small thing, my ears will stop catching fire. Thank you!

Greg Uhl of Uhl, Inc. wrote a couple of weeks ago:

Great job on today's "CoastLine" show [about retiree entrepreneurship]... I was only able to hear part of it but what I heard made me proud to live here and spurred me to share the program with someone who is starting their own business. The Small Business Center is one of the lesser known of our area's tremendous assets. I tell people that they can virtually get a "mini-business degree" just by attending the free seminars there.

We’d love to hear from you on Friday Feedback. You can always leave a message via email to feedback@WHQR.org. Our Feedback Phone is 910-292-9477. And thanks for your feedback.
