Friday Feedback for February 15, 2013

This audio is pending

Here’s an edited version of a letter we got from Sandy Evans, president of the North Carolina Jazz Festival:

I would like to thank WHQR for your radio/media sponsorship of the 33rd annual Festival this past weekend. We asked first time attendees where they learned about the Festival and many said “WHQR”. I also hope you were pleased with our initiative to bring musicians to 400 students at Roland Grise Middle School and a Bucky Pizzarelli guitar workshop, a trumpet workshop with Bria Skonberg, a reed workshop with Adrian Cunningham, and a violin master class with 17 year old prodigy Jonathan Russell.

Congratulations to the NC Jazz Festival, and thanks.

Did you think long and hard when composing your "comedy bit" on last [week's] Friday Feedback? It was a cheap and mundane bit of non-comedy. Mostly, it was dismissive to your listener(s)… Seems you're letting your "arrogant" flag out more. And, how nice to hear the 2nd hour on Neal Conan on Tuesday; now there's a courteous radio professional. Diane [Rehm] is a good show. Move her show to the a.m. Classical slot and. … move Classical programing entirely to the Classical station. Keep Fred Child, as that program is educational and does introduce us Folkie/Rock and Rollers to some great classical tunes and artists’. RadioLab is a great show- please keep it. And, you need to connect with the student population in Wilmington (UNC/Cape Fear Community College) if you are trying to expand your listeners' and possible subscriptions.

For clarification, Lynn is referring to the comment about drinking water made by listener Eric in last week's segment. I took a sip of water at the end of the comment to reinforce Eric's point, not intended as dismissive of either Eric or listeners in general. I regret that Lynn took it otherwise. And we are committed to classical programming, but we do not have a classical station to move those programs as Lynn suggests. At least for the present.

Listener Susan also wrote about an item in last week's Feedback:

I have to second Gina's opinion that WHQR pledge drives are bearable, and often even enjoyable, BECAUSE of the banter and occasional zaniness. You all seem to actually enjoy each other's company and you're smart, funny people. Sometimes I feel like I'm attending an exceptionally amusing cocktail party. One where people sing, laugh, and on occasion call out phone numbers! Don't change a thing.

And finally, I’m coming to you with a request. WHQR is working on a project that we hope will inform and educate the community about the issues surrounding the proposed Titan Cement plant for our area. We see this as fulfillment of our mission statement. have no agenda here, and we take no sides. Our interest is solely in examining the topic with the insight and in-depth coverage people expect from public radio, and letting listeners make up their minds.

We believe that voices in support of and in opposition to Titan deserve to be heard. If you can speak knowledgeably in support of Titan, we’d be particularly interested in talking with you. Please send an email to newsdirector@whqr.org.

We’d love to hear from you on Friday Feedback, for your questions and comments, likes and dislikes about any aspect of the station. You can also send us feedback by filling out a Comment below, by sending us an email message or by calling our Feedback line: 910-292-WHQR (9477). And thanks for your feedback.
