Friday Feedback for February 13, 2015

Love the separation of classical and talk radio. - Linda Hutchinson

Listeners reacted with approval to our recent announcement that Gina Gambony has been hired as our Classical Host. You hear her voice Tuesday - Friday between 9am and 1pm on Classical HQR, and at other times. Gloria Shirley wrote on our website:

Congratulations, Gina. I always knew you were destined for great things!

Jean D. wrote:

So happy to hear your news, Gina. It couldn't happen to a nicer person. Best wishes in your new venture.

Sue Abramsky and Harold Sparr wrote:

Thank you for letting us know. Needless to say we are delighted and are certain that Gina will be a great asset to wonderful WHQR.

And Erin wrote:

This is wonderful news! A great gift to WHQR audience members and the Wilmington community!

Here’s another comment from our recent Classical Music Survey. Carolyn wrote:

I feel as if classical music was "sold down the river". I received an HD radio whose sound quality doesn't equal my other radios, so that listening to classical music is not as rewarding as it was before the station split. In the evenings I'd very much appreciate a mixture of classical, jazz, folk and indie music, instead of the steady diet of jazz on the news station, which always comes in loud and clear.

Leslie wrote:

One thing I always appreciate about WHQR is your accuracy with the news. Therefore I wanted to let you know, relating to your story about the state school grades [last] Friday, in the local schools students have to have a grade of 70, not 63 to pass a class. Keep up the good work. You are the best station in town.

We wrote to Leslie that this information came directly from the Associated Press. We don’t know where the Associated Press got their information. Leslie, who teaches in local high schools, is in a position to know, and says

The grade scale is 93-100 is an A, 85-92 a B, 77-84 a C and 70-77 a D. So, unfortunately a grade below 70 is an F.

Thanks, Leslie, for the chance to correct this.

Kathleen Fox of Southport wrote on Wednesday:

Again this morning… I heard an extended report on today's cultural calendar that was just plain wrong. It started out by stating that it was Wednesday Feb. 4th and went on to describe a lot of things going on … which actually opened last week. This happened about 5:15 am. Do you just not think anyone listens at that time of day?… Even though we're half asleep, some of us depend on your local news/weather updates. Either get them right or don't report them at all!

For Kathleen and others, we do apologize for the error. The Cultural Calendar from Wednesday was accidentally recorded over the one from Tuesday, leaving the old Cultural Calendar active, and we didn’t discover the error until shortly after 9 am. We agree that listeners depend on the information and we must get it right. Thanks for writing.

NPR’s new show Invisibilia, about hidden realities in the world around us, debuted last weekend on WHQR. Carol Barre wrote:

Loved the show. Sat in my driveway 20 min to avoid missing a moment.

Linda Hutchison wrote:

[I] heard the first program Saturday. I could barely leave my car to grab a cup of coffee while listening. And then I regretted missing that 5 minutes. Loved the first one. Can’t wait to hear the next one. Thanks!… [Also], I Love the separation of classical and talk radio. I get more news and information. And I can get my music when I want it.

We’d love to hear from you on Friday Feedback. You can always leave a message via email to feedback@WHQR.org. Our Feedback Phone is 910-292-9477. And thanks for your feedback.
