CAPE FEAR MEMORIAL BRIDGE: Updates, resources, and context

Friday Feedback for December 18, 2015

Pat Marriott

Last week’s 1-day December drive continues to have good repercussions. I’ll get to some some comments in a minute, but here’s a message from Food Bank Executive Director Beth Gaglione:

I heard Cleve’s on-air message on Sunday thanking the community for their support of the one-day drive and mentioning the food bank. We are so happy to have been able to partner with you on this drive. It was wonderful exposure for the Food Bank and the work we do every day to provide food to people in need.

Here’s a comment from listener Darrel in Southport:

When Kenneth Turan – Film Critic for the Los Angeles Times – reviews a movie the review begins with with the title of the move and a brief overview of the movie before the in depth critique begins. I listen to the critique, which at times seems to be a sales pitch, and at the end decide whether or not I would like to see the movie. However, the title of the movie was given at the beginning of the pitch and it did not stay in my mind. I am over 50. What would be helpful would be for the announcer to at the end of the movie review/critique/sales pitch to say something like; ‘That was Kenneth Turan’s review of the movie ____.” Having the name at the end of the review would help to cement your decision that is typically made during the review, to see or not see the movie.

To this I say hear, hear! It’s something we stress here locally. Let’s hope NPR will follow suit.

Here, as promised last week, are some comments made during our recent one-day drive:

Sally MacKain and Bob Cutting said:

So glad you are partnering with [Food Bank] and so sorry there are so many hungry kids here or anywhere.

Liz Kachris-Jones and Bruce Jones said:

Thanks for providing the news we need along with your ongoing community support and partnership to the larger non-profit community.

Byron Croker said:

I personally appreciate getting rid of the classical music from 91.3.

Charles and Cherokee Drake of Carolina Beach said:

We moved here two years ago and when we listen to the radio, WHQR is it. We really enjoy Morning Edition (especially Ken Campbell who we listened to in Binghamton, NY), Car Talk, Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me, and the classical music.

Marybeth Althus said:

I like the 7:00PM Smooth Landings with George Schreibner.

Alison Yeargan said:

Love Coastline and Rachel Lewis Hilburn!!

LaTanya Brown said:

You are a wonderful station and I share information about the station whenever I can. I like the variety of music on the classical station.

Mike Moshofsky said:

The new programming is the best thing that ever happened. It provides good clear information to the public. Public radio is the only way to communicate effectively.

Clauston and Beth Jenkins said:

We are delighted with the classical format and glad to pledge again this year to support the new station.

We encourage you to sample some of the wonderful holiday programs we have this year on both HQR News and Classical HQR, including the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols from King’s College Cambridge, Christmas Eve at 10 am. You can find out about all of them at whqr.org.

We’d love to hear from you on Friday Feedback. You can always leave a message via email to feedback@WHQR.org. Our Feedback Phone is 910-292-9477. And thanks for your feedback.
