Marian McPartland and Eubie Blake

[music in]
The great pianist Marian McPartland passed way this week. Although she had not made any new recordings in recent years, her program Piano Jazz was the longest-running music show on NPR, and one that we carried for several years. Mary Virginia Swain posted on our website:

I listened to this show religiously when WHQR carried it. Such a delightful show, and Marian McPartland was a gem of a creative talent.

Indeed. We’re going to air a special tribute to Marian Wednesday during our Midday Café at 1 pm, repeated a week from tomorrow at 10 pm. Here she is, with a little “It Don’t Mean a Thing if it Ain’t Got That Swing.” [music fade]

Listener Elisabeth wrote:

As a former broadcaster in Boston and Hartford, it is a pleasure to be a 24-hour, across-the-board listener to WHQR. Thank you so much for quality RADIO.

Listener Mark wrote:

I'm trying to think if the letters WHQR stand for anything. Wilmington High Quality Radio?

Very good, Mark -- it stands for Wilmington's High Quality Radio. That was the name submitted by Theodosia “Teddy" Stickney, one of the founding members of Friends of the Opera (now Friends of Public Radio) almost 30 years ago, in September 1983. And we still stand for high quality radio, we hope. As Groucho Marx says in Horse Feathers, "A college widow stood for something in those days. In fact she stood for plenty.

DRSJones had this to say on our web page about The Resilience of Frogs:

Profound commentary from Andy Wood. I hope folks appreciate the example nature provides.

And several listeners weighed in on the commentary The Healing Garden, by Deborah Creasy.  Patty wrote:

Ah yes, gardening is the BEST medicine! Thanks Debby.

Catherine wrote:

A triumph of mind (and intelligence) over matter! Thanks for the reminder.

And Anne Russell wrote:

Delmarva's loss is Wilmington's gain.

Thalian Fan wrote on our website about a recent Cinematique movie, Much Ado About Nothing:

Now this looks like a Cinematique movie!! Bravo!!!
