About The Artists:

Larry Hovis: Larry and his wife moved to Wilmington in the early 1970s. They were drawn to the area because of the artistic potential of the historic district and its wonderful variety of architecture. They have lived in the district since 1978. Oil paint is his primary medium and he would categorize his style of painting as “expressionistic realism.” Larry paints where he lives, the buildings and landscapes of the historic district and old business district. He is intrigued by the way light and shadows affect the rhythm, movement and mood of the old buildings in Wilmington. Through his paintings, Larry tries to express the personalities of the present and past owners, and demonstrate how these structures relate to one another. He says, “It is very important to protect and preserve these relationships.  The painting of these structures is one way to inspire others to appreciate and understand the importance of this architectural heritage.”

Anne Van Blarcom Kurowski: Anne's artistic search has produced one of North Carolina's critically recognized artists. Her fascination with people, environments, and objects has been expressed with great success in oil, acrylic, watercolor, and pastel. Anne’s professional training began at Montclair State College in New Jersey, where she earned a BA and Master's Degree in Fine Arts. She is a signature member of the New Jersey Watercolor Society, the Philadelphia Watercolor Society, and an associate member of the Pastel Society of America. In juried exhibitions over the past 30 years, Anne's work has won acceptance and awards in some of the most prestigious exhibitions in America. She has shown work at The Newark Museum, The Monmouth Museum, The Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, The National Arts Club in New York City, and many corporate galleries. She says, “I paint subjects which silently speak to my attention. My aesthetic concern is to translate the appearance of my subjects through my senses and emotions to make contact with the feelings and perceptions of the viewer.”
