Communique: Orchestra, Choir, And Dancers Combine History And Fantasy | A Carolina Nutcracker

City Ballet of Wilmington
Rats in the wings at "A Carolina Nutcracker" rehearsal

Alex Hill

Wilmington's City Ballet premiered A Carolina Nutcracker in 2011 and it has become a local tradition, continuing this year. Approximately 100 dancers perform roles as the Mouse King, the Sugar Plum Fairy, soldiers, rats, Drosselmeyer, and all the rest...but this Nutcracker incorporates Wilmington history as well-without sacrificing any of the classical Tchaikovsky elements. The performance is at CFCC's Wilson Centeron Saturday, 12/3 at 7:00pm & Sunday, 12/4 at 3:00pm.

Alex Hill is the Music Director for the City Ballet and conducts the 50-piece orchestra and choir. He calls A Carolina Nutcracker "the intersection of history and fantasy." Listen to our interview with Alex Hill above.  Listen to a Web Extra about the old tradition of belsnickling (included in the performance) below.

The professional musicians gathered for this performance include members of the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra, Long Bay Symphony, Wilmington Symphonic Winds, and Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra.
