College Day at UNCW isn't for regular college students. It's for the community. On Saturday, October 29th, non-students of any age can attend 4 classes, plus have lunch, at UNCW. The deadline to register is this Friday, October 21st. Dr. Richard Ogle, the Associate Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences and Professor of Psychology, joined us to talk about the event. Online registration is available. UNCW's Osher Lifelong Institute (OLLI) is collaborating with the University for this event.
Registrants will check in between 8 and 8:30 a.m. in the Warwick Center Ballroom and pick up their class locations. UNCW Provost Marilyn Sheerer will deliver welcoming remarks at 8:30 a.m. Each class session is an hour long, with the first beginning at 9 a.m. and the last at starting at 2:30 p.m. Prices are $35 for OLLI members and $45 for non-members (includes a catered lunch). Those interested must register online or call 910.962.3195. Registration closes on Oct. 21.
Ogle says the community is enriched by attending these 1-hour lectures with UNCW professors-and that the University is also enriched through the interaction with people in the community. A new dimension of College Day for the University is the trending questioning of the value of university education-particularly, liberal arts education. Ogle believes College Day is an opportunity for naysayers to get a glimpse of the kind of critical thinking and mind-broadening experience classes from the College of Arts & Sciences offer.
