CAPE FEAR MEMORIAL BRIDGE CLOSURE: UPDATES, RESOURCES, AND CONTEXT

CoastLine: Uses and Misuses of English

This broadcast of CoastLine originally aired on July 23, 2014.

Our media-saturated society is constantly bombarding us with new expressions. Whether from sports, the media, advertising, business or politics, we hear new ways of using language all the time – the good, the bad, and the ugly. We hear some examples of each in this show.

Our guest was WHQR’s own Nan Graham. Nan graduated from Tuscaloosa High School and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she graduated with an AB in English. She obtained her Masters' degree from The Citadel in Charleston. In 1995 Nan began broadcasting commentaries here on WHQR. She continues them along with teaching at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in the Honors College.

A lifelong Southerner, Nan’s view of her eccentric family and friends has delighted public radio listeners for years. Nan's second book, In a Magnolia Minute...Secrets of a Late Bloomer as well as her first, Turn South at the Next Magnolia: Directions from a Life-long Southerner, were both on the Southeastern Booksellers' Association bestseller list. The books are compilations of her best and most popular radio commentaries. Her website is nangraham.com.

In parts 2 and 3, Barbara Bush (also an English major and a true Southerner) joins us and lots of callers and emailers in a spirited discussion of language dos and don'ts.
