In the Town of Oak Island, four people are hoping to be the next Mayor. The office comes with a two-year term; Town Council members serve staggered four-year terms and are elected every two years in non-partisan elections.
The Town of Oak Island, which is part of Brunswick County and sits mostly on a barrier island, is only sixteen years old. It was 1999 that Yaupon Beach and Long Beach merged to form Oak Island. The town boasts a year-round population of nearly 7,000 people – but that number can swell during the summer on a daily basis to around 45,000.
Mayor Betty Wallace has served three terms and has chosen not to run for a fourth.

Cin Brochure lived in Kinston for more than 34 years before moving to Oak Island where she re-entered the business of real estate in 2007. In Kinston, she served as the Vice President of the Kinston / Lenoir County Chamber of Commerce and as Assistant Executive Director of Tourism of the Kinston / Lenoir County Tourism Development Authority (TDA). For the last four years, she has worked as Tourism Director for the City of Southport. She is the mother of three daughters and one son, and she is the grandmother of five.
Richard D’Anjolell was an associate producer in the corporate communications and entertainment field for twenty years before moving to the Oak Island area in 1997 to raise a family at the beach. Since the move, he has run a diverse group of businesses including real estate sales for both commercial and recreational development. He is the father of three South Brunswick High School students, Katie, Emma, and Michael.
Bill Moyer attended Guilford College before going to work as a freight rate analyst with Lorillard. He later served as a patrol officer and in the detective division of the Greensboro Police Department. He has owned real estate investment and management businesses in Greensboro. When he moved to the area twenty-three years ago, he opened Structural Damage Specialists in southeastern North Carolina. He holds a patent and founded a termite detection company fourteen years ago. He has written and published twenty-two books. Bill Moyer has been happily married for forty-five years, and has a son, daughter, and five grandchildren all living nearby.
Darrell Vickers has worked as an engineer, entrepreneur, educator, and college administrator. Several years ago, the Vickers decided to make Oak Island their retirement home. Mr. Vickers has worked at Fayetteville State University, set up satellite locations at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base and the Gateway Center in Rocky Mount, and worked as Director of the MBA program. He says his background is in international business and overseas manufacturing, and he holds a B.S. in Engineering Physics and an MBA. He was the Group V. P. of Public Affairs and Community Development for the Greater Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce. He is currently Secretary for the Brunswick County GOP. He is a Mason, a Rotarian, and attends Oceanview United Methodist Church. He is married to Methodist Pastor Reverend Hope Vickers.
