Wilmington, NC – State lawmakers are attempting to crack down on cell phone use in the car, but some traffic officials say the bill would be difficult to enforce.
A new bill prohibiting teens from chatting on cell phones behind the wheel contains a loophole allowing some calls. Lieutenant Everett Clendenin of the North Carolina Highway Patrol says such loopholes would make issuing citations difficult.
The fact that there's something there that says they can talk to the parents, or a caregiver, then, you know, it makes it tougher on the law enforcement community because then they can use that as an excuse and there's no way we can verify.
The cell phone bill passed in General Assembly and is now under review at Governor Mike Easley's office.
