Business Leaders, Owners Gathering in Wilmington for BizTech Conference

The BizTech annual conference and expo is in Wilmington tomorrow.

WHQR’s Michelle Bliss reports that event is the largest business gathering in the region and will feature an expo hall, business seminars, and keynote speakers including PPD founder Fred Eshelman and former North Carolina Governor Jim Hunt.

Rob Kaiser is publisher for the Greater Wilmington Business Journal which is spearheading the event. He says that Eshelman and Hunt will be talking about how education across the state is an essential business investment.

“I think both those gentleman look at the education system as the bedrock of the business community. If we’re not producing people coming out of the university as workers and as entrepreneurs, and with the research that comes out, then North Carolina as a state to do business is going to take a big step backwards.”

UNCW Chancellor Gary Miller will moderate the discussion. Other seminars will discuss healthcare costs for businesses and how to effectively use social media to reach potential customers.

After growing up in Woodbridge, Virginia, Michelle attended Virginia Tech before moving to Wilmington to complete her Master in Fine Arts from the University of North Carolina in Wilmington. Her reporting and nonfiction writing have been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered, within the pages of Wrightsville Beach Magazine, and in literary journals like River Teeth and Ninth Letter. Before moving to Wilmington, Michelle served as the general manager for WUVT, a community radio station in Blacksburg, Virginia. She lives with her husband Scott and their pups, Katie, Cooper, and Mosey.
