Brunswick County voters had to decide a County Commission race, District 13’s GOP candidate for District Attorney, and the Republican candidate for State House District 17 in yesterday’s primary – along with whether to green light a new sales tax.
It was one of the few State House races in the region that even had a primary contest. Republican Incumbent Frank Iler faced off against challenger Marion Davis for House District 17 – which covers a large part of Brunswick County. Iler handily fended off that challenge – picking up nearly 70% of the vote.
Brunswick County’s District 1 had three people vying for one open seat on the County Board. Randy Thompson easily defeated Bud Thorsen and Frank Blue.
Jon David, the current District Attorney, faced challenger Ryan Smithwick. David successfully defended his spot on the GOP ticket.
The sales tax question was roundly defeated by Brunswick County voters – with nearly 60% giving it a thumbs-down. But Bald Head Islanders voted overwhelmingly to approve a bond that will fund a terminal groin project.
