New Hanover County Commissioner Brian Berger has been arrested again.
WHQR’s Michelle Bliss reports that after Berger failed to appear in court Friday morning District Judge Shelly Holt issued a warrant for his arrest.
Berger was scheduled to be in court for a hearing related to a domestic violence protective order that Berger violated in the fall by attending a public meeting at the workplace of his ex-girlfriend.
After Judge Holt issued the warrant for Berger’s arrest, deputies found the commissioner at his home and transported him to the New Hanover County Detention Facility. Holt placed Berger under a $25,000 secured bond and has required a mental health evaluation.
Back in September, in an unprecedented move, the four other county commissioners held a press conference and publicly urged Berger to resign from his post. They said his continued run-ins with the law were distracting and harmful to the county’s reputation.
