Bill To Rename Department of Navy
By Maggie Martin
Wilmington, NC – North Carolina Congressman Walter Jones is pushing to rename the Department of the Navy to include the Marine Corps.
Jones first introduced legislation a decade ago to rename it "The Department of the Navy and Marine Corps."
But now, the House is scheduled to vote on the bill next month. Jones says the legislation isn't just about a name change.
"It's just givin' the Marine Corps proper recognition. They have earned this through the history of giving their lives, their bodies and loved ones giving loved ones who were either killed or wounded. So I mean it's just a matter of why not do it?"
Jones says he's optimistic it will pass in the House. Both North Carolina Senators Richard Burr and Kay Hagan support the name change.
