Big blue recycling carts start arriving at Wilmington homes today

City of Wilmington

Starting today, City of Wilmington residents will see large blue recycling containers showing up at their homes.  As WHQR’s Rachel Lewis Hilburn reports, the larger bins are expected to lower costs for the City.

Recycling is heaviest during the holidays, and so delivery of twenty-thousand big blue carts to city residents begins today and runs through December 1st.

The larger cart size will allow the City to pick up recycling less often – every other week beginning January 7th

The carts won’t cost anything for residents who participate in the city’s voluntary recycling program.  And there is no change in pickup fees or pickup days.  But city officials say they expect to save more than two-hundred thousand dollars over the course of the year with less frequent collection.  They also project a fifteen to twenty percent increase in recycled material.

Trash and yard waste will still be picked up weekly.

Recycling customers will be assigned to a BLUE week or a WHITE week.  To find out more, check out the recycling schedule on theCity of Wilmington's website:
