Wilmington, NC – The New Hanover County Board of Commissioners are plowing through hundreds of pages of bids from private companies vying to take over the county's landfill and waste-to-energy facility.
Seven companies submitted bids last month requested by county commissioners. If commissioners decide to hand over the landfill and WASTEC, the only waste-to-energy facility in the state, to private industry then the company will set prices and decide services for New Hanover County residents.
Two trash haulers who currently do business with the county, Waste Management and Waste Industries, both submitted proposals. Along with the energy company Covanta.
The county says the bids are considered proprietary information and so they won't be made public until a decision is made. New Hanover County commissioners say it's likely they won't address whether to allow private industry to take over the landfill and WASTEC until next month.
