New Hanover County residents should start cleaning out the garage!
Friday, March 29 is Hazardous Waste Collection Day. It’s slated for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Wilmington International Airport in front of the Customs Building (1987 Hall Drive, Wilmington). This is a rain-or-shine event for New Hanover County residents only.
Examples of acceptable hazardous waste include: Car batteries, electronics – such as TVs and computers, motor oil, anti-freeze, household cleaners, and pesticides. Business waste and paint are prohibited.
Examples of household hazardous waste that will be accepted at the event include:
- Car batteries
- Cell phones
- Household cleaners
- Fluorescent tubes
- Mercury thermostats & thermometers
- Motor oil & antifreeze
- Pesticides & herbicides
- Electronics (TVs, computers, etc.)
- Fuels
- Rechargeable Household Batteries
- Solvents
- Fertilizers
- Smoke Detectors
There are several items which will not be accepted, including:
- Paint
- Furniture
- Ammunition
- Medications
- Asbestos
- Propane gas cylinders
- Trash
- Industrial materials
- Appliances
- Tires
- Sharp items (hypodermic needles)
- Commercial or business waste
City of Wilmington trash customers can contact the Solid Waste division at 341-7875 to find out how to dispose of other items, such as paint.
Household hazardous waste can be harmful to humans, animals and our environment. Improper disposal can pollute streams, rivers, drinking water and groundwater.
